Staff Spotlight: James Walters

Meet James Walters
James Walters, a Tulsa native, graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 2016 with a degree in Bible Studies. After marrying his wife Natalie, the couple moved to the Louisville area, where they are now busy raising their one-year-old daughter. Outside of work, James enjoys funk music and old video games, combining his love of retro nostalgia with modern creativity.

What James Does at Unique
As one of the developers behind Handbook, James plays a critical role in maintaining the knowledge base system used in Patron Services, ensuring the software and its content run smoothly. In addition to his work on Handbook, James designs emails for MessageBee and has recently started contributing to the platform’s codebase as a developer.

Why James Enjoys Unique
James appreciates Unique’s balance between stability and innovation. “Unique is in a sweet spot,” he says, referring to the company’s established foundation paired with its continuous growth and experimentation. This dynamic environment fuels James’s creativity and makes Unique an exciting place to work.

James’s Favorite Unique Memory
James fondly recalls his time on Patron Services’ library implementation team, a group he describes as tight-knit and like-minded. “We had a lot of fun working together,” he remembers.

James’s Favorite Thing About Libraries
For James, libraries represent creativity and possibility, especially through their maker spaces. Using the laser cutter at his local library, he crafted an acrylic enclosure for a handheld video game system he’s building from a kit. “Someday I’ll put it all together!” he says with enthusiasm.
